Latest Ghana News: Former GRA Boss and Two Ex-Officials Arrested Over SML Contract Scandal

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has taken into custody three former senior officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), including its most recent Commissioner-General, Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, as part of a sweeping investigation into the high-profile Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) scandal.

Joining him in custody are former GRA heavyweights Dr. Isaac Crentsil and Christian Tetteh Sottie, all of whom are being questioned in connection with alleged corruption and mismanagement related to revenue assurance contracts awarded to SML.

In a public release, the Office of the Special Prosecutor stated the arrests were directly linked to “ongoing investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences in respect of contracts between the GRA and SML for revenue assurance services.”

The broader investigation also aims to verify SML’s claims that its operations have helped prevent significant losses to the state’s coffers, a point that has sparked heated debate and calls for accountability.

The arrests come as the SML contract faces mounting public and institutional scrutiny, with critics raising red flags over alleged financial irregularities, questionable contract terms, and possible breaches in procurement protocol.

This latest development adds further pressure to the already embattled revenue assurance initiative, which was intended to boost transparency and efficiency in state revenue collection but has instead drawn accusations of opacity and mismanagement.
