University of Ghana Issues COVID-19 Alert as Cases Resurface on Legon Campus
A renewed wave of COVID-19 cases has prompted the University of Ghana Health Services Directorate to issue a cautionary alert, warning the Legon campus community of both suspected and confirmed infections within its population.
In a public notice released on June 23, 2025, the Directorate acknowledged a noticeable rise in cases and announced the reactivation of its COVID-19 response measures. The advisory, directed at students, staff, and visitors, stressed the urgent need for compliance with preventive protocols to avoid a full-blown outbreak.
“The Health Services Directorate has reactivated its COVID-19 Response Protocols, including screening and triage at our health facilities,” the statement read. “We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates.”
To curb the spread, the university has reinstated several safety recommendations. These include mandatory mask-wearing in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces, frequent handwashing or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and maintaining a minimum one-metre distance from others. Offices and lecture halls are also required to ensure adequate ventilation.
Additionally, individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms are being advised to isolate immediately and seek medical attention. The notice strongly discouraged participation in large gatherings, reinforcing the importance of early intervention and personal responsibility.
“Anyone experiencing symptoms or seeking more information is advised to contact the University Hospital at Legon,” the statement added.
