Ghana’s film industry will be receiving a significant boost as Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson unveiled plans to inject GH¢20 million into the sector, with a special focus on revitalizing Kumawood.
Speaking in Parliament during the 2026 Budget and Economic Policy Statement on Thursday, November 13, under the theme “Resetting for Growth, Jobs and Economic Transformation,” Dr Forson revealed that the funding will be provided through the Film Fund to offer crucial seed capital to Kumawood and other film associations.
“Mr Speaker, Government has allocated an amount of GH¢20 million to the Film Fund as seed money to revive the film industry such as Kumawood and other film associations,” he stated.
Dr Forson also announced further support for the broader creative economy. “Government has also allocated an amount of GH¢20 million to the Creative Arts Fund as seed money for the arts, music, fashion, food and other creative sectors,” he added.
Once the heartbeat of Ghanaian cinema, Kumawood has suffered a sharp decline in recent years. At its peak, the Kumasi-based industry churned out numerous films monthly, providing steady employment for hundreds of actors, directors, producers, and technical crew. Today, production has slowed dramatically.
Several factors have contributed to this downturn. The rise of digital streaming has changed audience habits, widespread piracy has drained revenue, and insufficient funding coupled with weak distribution networks has forced many industry professionals to abandon filmmaking or seek alternative careers.
This will be a welcoming news for creatives in Ghana.
