President Mahama Unveils Free Visa Entry for All Africans Starting Africa Day

John Mahama

Ghana is set to open its doors wider to the continent, with President John Mahama unveiling a new visa policy that removes cost barriers for African travellers.

Starting May 25, in line with Africa Day, citizens from across Africa will be able to secure entry into Ghana without paying visa fees. The process will shift online, allowing applicants to obtain e-visas at no charge, a move aimed at easing mobility and strengthening regional ties.

The policy was disclosed during bilateral discussions with Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Mnangagwa, held on the sidelines of an African Union summit.

“I’m also pleased to announce that effective 25th May 2026, when we commemorate Africa Day, Ghana will commence a free visa regime for all Africans. Africans travelling to Ghana will receive their e-visas online, free of charge. But between Ghana and Zimbabwe, in Laos, we have a visa-free environment already.”

“You can travel to each other’s countries without needing a visa. You just hop onto the plane and arrive in each other’s country,” he said on Thursday.

Officials say the removal of fees will not weaken border controls. According to the president, screening systems have been reinforced to vet applicants before any travel approval is issued.

Ghana’s decision places it among a small group of African nations pushing for open movement across the continent. Countries such as Rwanda, Seychelles, and The Gambia already allow visa-free access to all African passport holders.
