Cheers and chants filled the Gomoa Street Carnival when Shatta Wale turned his set into a rallying call, urging authorities to halt the extradition of businessman Frederick Kumi.
From the stage on April 5, 2026, the dancehall star whipped up sections of the crowd, repeatedly demanding Kumi’s release while questioning the narrative around fraud.
“Free Abu! Free Abu! Free Abu! Nobody does fraud here. Would they say someone is a fraudster if they had given us jobs? We all want money,” he told the audience.
Away from the carnival atmosphere, the legal battle has taken a decisive turn. The Gbese District Court has approved a request to hand Kumi over to authorities in the United States following his indictment in connection with an alleged online romance scam said to exceed $8 million.
Even so, the ruling is not the final word. The court has allowed a 15-day window for Kumi’s lawyers to contest the decision, temporarily pausing the extradition to make room for a possible habeas corpus filing. Claims by the defence that the case is politically motivated or the result of entrapment were dismissed.
