The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has stepped up its clampdown on unsafe alcoholic products, confiscating 140 boxes of drinks mixed with stimulants during an operation in the Upper East Region.
Among the seized items were Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody’s Vody Energy Mix, two products already prohibited from being sold on the Ghanaian market.
The FDA said the drinks were banned due to concerns that the stimulant ingredients could conceal the effects of alcohol intoxication, making it easier for consumers to drink beyond safe limits and exposing them to serious health risks.
According to the Authority, mixing alcohol with stimulants can leave users unaware of how impaired they actually are, a situation that may result in alcohol poisoning, dangerous behaviour and other harmful outcomes.
In a public advisory, the FDA cautioned the public against buying or consuming the products while reiterating its resolve to enforce food and drug safety standards nationwide.
“The FDA is working for your safety!” the Authority stated.
The seizure is part of the FDA’s ongoing nationwide monitoring and enforcement exercise targeted at removing unapproved and potentially harmful products from circulation.
