GES Assures SHS Placement for All Qualified BECE Candidates

Ghana Education Service

With placement concerns mounting ahead of the new academic year, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has moved to reassure families that every qualified Junior High School graduate will secure admission into a Senior High or Technical School when classes resume on September 18, 2026.

The clarification follows media reports claiming nearly 72,000 students could miss out on placement. GES, however, says those claims are false and do not reflect the actual preparations underway for the upcoming school year.

In a statement released on May 14, the Service congratulated candidates who completed this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and appealed to the public not to be swayed by what it described as misleading reports.

“The report circulating in sections of the media suggesting that about 72,000 students risk not being placed is speculative and does not reflect the reality. We, therefore, urge the public to disregard it,” the statement read.

According to the Service, arrangements across the country have already been made to ensure enough space is available for all eligible students entering second-cycle institutions.

“There are adequate infrastructure and facilities to accommodate all qualified students,” Management assured.

GES also addressed public anxiety surrounding the gradual phase-out of the double-track system, insisting the transition will not shut students out of secondary education opportunities.

The Service explained that the reform is intended to strengthen academic delivery and improve conditions for teaching and learning without affecting student access.

“It will rather improve the quality of teaching and learning while maintaining full access for all students,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its commitment to equitable and inclusive education, GES called on parents, teachers and other stakeholders to continue supporting reforms aimed at improving the country’s education sector.

The Service further appealed for calm among guardians and parents, stressing that no qualified candidate would lose placement because of limited capacity.
