Media personality and entrepreneur Shatta Michy has condemned the recent attacks on Ghanaians and other African migrants in South Africa, describing the incidents as heartbreaking and a setback to African unity.
Michy shared her thoughts on June 7, 2026, at the Accra International Airport, where she joined officials and well-wishers to receive Ghanaians who had been evacuated from South Africa following the unrest.
Reflecting on the developments, she said it was disturbing to see fellow Africans target one another despite the continent’s shared identity and history.
“I followed what went on in South Africa. It is unfortunate that Africans would do that to each other, because we are all brothers and sisters. So what happened was very sad and unfortunate,” she said.
The businesswoman also applauded the Ghanaian government for its intervention, singling out President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for their role in ensuring the safe return of affected citizens.
According to her, the speed and level of attention shown to the stranded Ghanaians demonstrated genuine concern and leadership during a difficult period.
“We need to give a big thanks to the government, especially the president and the foreign affairs minister, because the attention they gave the Ghanaians in South Africa is like that of a father attending to his child in distress,” she stated.
Michy added that the experience had reinforced her appreciation for Ghana and the sense of security that comes with having a country that stands by its people.
“I am proud to be a Ghanaian. Because I know that if you are not loved anywhere, you are loved at home,” she said.
