Ghana Postpones Police, Immigration and Prisons Recruitment After El-Wak Stampede

Minister of Interior -Ghana - Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak

The Interior Ministry has shifted the nationwide recruitment timetable for the internal security agencies, delaying the process in response to the stampede that unfolded during a similar military exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium last Wednesday.

Instead of beginning on Saturday, November 15, the recruitment drive will now commence on Monday, November 17. The announcement was made on Friday during a press briefing addressed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, who linked the adjustment to the tragedy at El-Wak.

The minister explained that the Police, Immigration and Prisons Service will proceed with their exercises on the new date, and that revised schedules will be shared through national newspapers, official social media outlets and the relevant ministries and agencies.

Official figures show that 28 people were affected during the El-Wak stampede. Twelve remain in critical condition, five are receiving intensive care and six have been confirmed dead. Authorities also noted that a separate recruitment activity held in Kumasi resulted in five additional injuries.

Many people have commiserated with the victims’ families.
