NDC Renames National Headquarters After Jerry Rawlings on 79th Birthday

Jerry John Rawlings

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to permanently honour its founder, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, by renaming its national headquarters in Adabraka after him as part of activities marking what would have been his 79th birthday.

The party’s headquarters in Accra will officially be known as Jerry Rawlings House, with a bust of the former President also scheduled to be unveiled during a ceremony on Monday, June 22, 2026. President John Dramani Mahama is expected to lead the event alongside senior figures of the party.

The decision comes five years and seven months after Rawlings’ death and is intended to preserve the legacy of the man who founded the NDC and played a central role in Ghana’s political history.

The commemoration is being organised jointly by the NDC and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”

According to a statement issued by the party, the day’s activities will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the naming of the headquarters and the unveiling of Rawlings’ bust. President Mahama and other leading members of the NDC are expected to address attendees.

A second event, comprising a lecture and exhibition, will take place later in the day at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences near the CSIR in Accra. The programme is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Ghanaian lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata will deliver the keynote address, while former Local Government Minister Dr Akwasi Opong Fosu and former Information and National Security Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi are also expected to speak.

The organisers have extended an invitation to members of the public, party supporters, cadres and NDC faithful to participate in both events as the party celebrates Rawlings’ birthday and reflects on his enduring contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey.

In a statement signed by Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the party described the commemoration as an opportunity to honour the life, leadership and legacy of its founding father.
