Ghanaian musician Guru has declared that incumbent Members of Parliament in Ayawaso, Nkoranza South and Nkoranza North would struggle to retain their seats if he decided to enter parliamentary politics.
The former University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UG SRC) president, known in private life as Maradona Yeboah Adjei, believes his record as a student leader and the development initiatives he has undertaken in the three areas have already earned him considerable support among residents.
Speaking in a recent radio interview, Guru expressed confidence that his popularity in the constituencies would translate into votes should he contest any of the parliamentary seats.
“If I decide to contest for MP in Ayawaso, Nkoranza South or Nkoranza North, the MPs there should resign because they will not win.
“Because of the work I have done in those places, the people there will leave everyone and vote for me,” Guru stated.
To support his political claims, the musician pointed to his one-year tenure as SRC president of the University of Ghana, arguing that the initiatives he introduced during that period demonstrated his capacity to deliver results in a leadership position.
“Look at my track record when I was the SRC president of the University of Ghana for just a year,” he said.
Guru highlighted several interventions he championed to improve students’ welfare, including providing food for students and constructing boreholes to help address water shortages on campus.
He also recalled taking legal action against the university in a bid to secure a 25% reduction in school fees, citing the move as another example of his willingness to challenge existing arrangements in the interest of those he represented.
The musician maintained that the achievements recorded during his brief time in student leadership offered an indication of what he could accomplish with a longer mandate in Parliament.
He argued that a four-year term would give him more time to implement development policies and pursue initiatives capable of making a greater impact on the lives of his constituents.
“There are dozens of policies I was working on before my tenure expired. So if you compare what I was able to achieve for thousands of students in a year, do you think I won’t be able to do more in four years?
“So I already have a lot of support in these constituencies. If I decide to run for MP, those there should just resign,” Guru further stated.
