Wassa East MP Organises Free Eye Screening For Constituents

The Member of Parliament for Wassa East, Hon Isaac Adjei Mensah has organised a free eye screening exercise for 65,000 constituents suffering from diverse eye problems.

About 6500 people were screened for the first phase and many cases were booked for operation at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The exercise was used to provide free medication and eye glasses to those with mild conditions, while those with serious conditions were offered surgical operations to correct defects.

He undertook the exercise in partnership with the Cape-Coast Teaching Hospital.

The initiative saw the beneficiaries converging on a number of Community-based Health and Planning Services (CHPS) compounds at Wassa East Constituency where eye specialists, aided by a number of physician assistants, screened the people for various eye defects including cataract and glaucoma.

Hon Isaac Adjei Mensah said as a representative of the people, one major issue he had observed was the increasing number of people with eye problems in the constituency.

In spite of the challenge, he said there was no eye clinic in the area, compelling the people to travel frequently to Cape-Coast or to Accra to seek medical care.

“This is a huge relief for my people and I am happy that I have succeeded with this intervention for my people.

“It is going to be an annual affair so that those who have benefitted can come back for review and those who may be suffering from new eye problems within the year will also get the opportunity to get treated,” he stated.
