Bawumia promises to sign anti-LGBTQ bill if it is ruled constitutional
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to sign the anti-LGBTQ bill into law if it is deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court.
The bill is currently awaiting a ruling from the Court, and there have been delays in the proceedings. This has led to calls for a quicker resolution from various stakeholders, including the Osu Traditional Council and Samuel Nartey George, the lead advocate for the bill.
The Supreme Court has deferred its decision on injunction applications that aim to prevent the bill from being sent to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent. The Court has decided to issue its ruling on these applications alongside the final judgment on the bill’s constitutionality.
During a recent media interaction, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to signing the bill if it passes constitutional scrutiny. He stated, “I think that is very, very important. The bill is before the Supreme Court right now, and there are certain challenges to it, suggesting that it’s not consistent with the constitution.”
He added, “Of course, we’ll wait for the ruling, and once it’s out of the Supreme Court and they declare it constitutional, I believe signing is automatic. There shouldn’t be any issue—no ifs and no buts, we won’t allow.”
