Lydia Forson joins #FreetheCitizens campaign; tells President Akufo-Addo: “This cannot be your legacy”

The arrest of several protestors in Ghana has sparked the online #FreetheCitizens campaign, with numerous Ghanaian celebrities joining the conversation and sharing their opinions.

Some of the protestors from the Democracy Hub-organized demonstration were detained by Ghanaian police after a confrontation. About 39 of them were remanded for two weeks on Tuesday after a court appearance. A new report reveals that another group of protestors was arraigned in an Accra court on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

Although they have pleaded not guilty, they face charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, and offensive conduct.

Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson shared her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), addressing President Akufo-Addo directly, saying this cannot be his legacy.

She reminded him of his past as a leader of demonstrations.

Lydia Forson wrote: “Dear @NAkufoAddo, This cannot be your legacy! You spent years as a human rights activist, holding placards in the streets! What happened? What happened to the man from ‘Kume Preko’? Your ‘Fellow Ghanaians’ are heeding your call to be citizens, not spectators.”

The protestors were raising concerns about the negative impact of illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.
