Canadian-Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah has earned one of African cinema’s most prestigious honors, winning Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAAs) for her outstanding performance in ‘Red Carpet’.

Announced at the AMAA gala in Lagos, Nigeria, on November 2, this win marks a new milestone in Appiah’s celebrated career, underscoring her dedication to her craft over two decades.

Appiah faced tough competition from a lineup of talented nominees, yet her role in ‘Red Carpet’ stood out. The film, directed by Frank Rajah Arase and produced by Samira Yakubu of Samis Media, boasts an all-star cast, including Kalsoume Sinare, Grace Omaboe, Selly Ghally, Roseline Ngissah, Adjetey Annang, Abeiku Santana, Beverly Afaglo, and Deyemi Okanlawon.

Appiah’s journey with the AMAAs began in 2007 when she won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Beyonce. She quickly rose to prominence, winning her first Best Actress in a Leading Role award in 2010 for The Perfect Picture, where she delivered a nuanced performance as a wife facing marital struggles. Over the years, she has received consistent nominations, from Princess Tyra in 2008 to Red Carpet in 2024.

In addition to the AMAAs, Appiah’s talent has been recognized with numerous awards, including Best Actress at the 2010 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the Ghana Movie Awards, and Pan African Actress of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards in 2011.

For Red Carpet, this AMAA win adds to its achievements, including a nomination for Achievement in Soundtrack, credited to Bernie Anti’s captivating score. This recognition at the 20th anniversary of the AMAAs celebrates Appiah’s impactful career and her contributions to African cinema, inspiring fans and aspiring actors across the continent.
