The one-week observation for Ghanaian highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has been moved from the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon to Black Star Square (Independence Square). The relocation comes after a strict directive from the La State Council.
DLFM, Daddy Lumba’s radio station, confirmed the change in a statement shared on social media Thursday, August 28, 2025. The family emphasized that the date of the observation, Saturday, August 30, 2025, remains unchanged despite the venue shift.
“Important announcement – change of venue.
One week observation for the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu (Daddy Lumba)
Please be informed that while the date remains unchanged, Saturday, 30th August 2025, there has been a venue change.
New venue: Black Star Square,” the post read.
The move follows a warning from the La Homowo Planning Committee. Jeffrey Tetteh, Assistant Secretary of the La State Council, stated that holding the event within the La Traditional Area would violate an ongoing noisemaking ban.
The council’s statement clarified that the ban, which began Monday, August 11, 2025, prohibits all forms of noisemaking as well as funerals and funeral-related activities. The restrictions cover the La Traditional Area, spanning from La township to Maalejor along the Dodowa Road, and reaching Ayi Mensah at the foot of the Aburi Mountains.
“During this sacred period, Niimei would have entered the spiritual realm and as such, no activity that contravenes the cultural and spiritual order will be tolerated,” the council warned.
While expressing condolences over Daddy Lumba’s passing on July 26, 2025, at the age of 60, the council recognized his immense contributions to Ghanaian and international music.
However, it stressed that no funeral-related event could take place until the ban lifts on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. The council further cautioned that violating the directive would attract both customary and legal consequences.
“The La State Council cautions all persons, families, groups, and organisers against any attempt to hold or facilitate such funeral-related events within the La Traditional Area during the ban. Any such planned activity must be postponed, rescheduled or cancelled outright,” the statement added.
