“I Do Not Know Any Member of the Party” — Sarkodie Clears the Air on NPP Rumours

Sarkodie

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has dismissed ongoing rumours that he is tied to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stressing that he holds no political allegiance.

He addressed the controversy at the Kumasi Rising Music, Media, and Tourism Dialogue on September 25, 2025, at the IDL Conference Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). During a conversation with Serwaa Amihere, Sarkodie explained that neither he nor his career has received support from the ruling party.

“Do I have a connection with the NPP? I do not know any member of the party. People keep saying that I did a song for them, but they have not given me any money. I said a line in a verse about our ex-president, for which I still stand by,” Sarkodie said.

The award-winning artist’s clarification comes as he gears up for his Rapperholic Homecoming concert.

Talk of his alleged political ties dates back to 2020, when his hit single Happy Day featuring Kuami Eugene drew public attention. The track included the line “Nana Toaso,” which was also the campaign slogan of then-President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The lyric sparked a wave of speculation, with some interpreting it as an endorsement. The NPP later adopted the song during campaign rallies, further fueling the perception.

Sarkodie, however, has since maintained that the line reflected his admiration for the free education policy and its social impact, not partisan loyalty. While critics continue to point to the song as evidence, he insists it was an artistic expression rather than political promotion.
