The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has confirmed that fifteen people, including eleven children, lost their lives in a devastating boat accident near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
Authorities say the wooden boat, which was reportedly carrying passengers far beyond its capacity, capsized while attempting to cross the Volta Lake. The victims include children aged two to fourteen, along with four adults, while four passengers were rescued.
In a statement describing the tragedy as “heartbreaking,” the GMA expressed its “deepest, most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the Kete Krachi community enduring this unimaginable loss.”
Following the accident, the Authority has launched a set of emergency measures aimed at improving safety on inland waters. A special investigative team, made up of Maritime Inspectors and the Navy Task Force, has been deployed to determine the cause of the incident and ensure accountability.
A Casualty Investigations Committee will also be established with the Ministry of Transport to assess current safety protocols and propose urgent policy reforms for safer water transport.
The GMA further announced the start of a lakeside safety enforcement campaign focused on preventing overloading and ensuring all boats carry life-saving equipment. Any vessel found breaching safety rules will be impounded, and its operators prosecuted.
“The GMA remains resolute in its commitment to safer water transport,” the statement emphasized.
The Authority urged communities along the Volta Lake to take extra precautions when traveling by boat.
“Do not board any boat that is visibly overloaded or lacks lifejackets. Your refusal could save a life, especially a child’s,” the statement added.
