Lawyer Williams Kusi, representing Akosua Serwaa in the ongoing legal dispute over the funeral of late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, insists his client is the true victim in the feud surrounding the musician’s burial, not Priscilla Ofori, popularly known as Odo Broni.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, October 16, after the court adjourned the injunction hearing, the lawyer said the late singer’s family fully supports Akosua Serwaa. He disclosed that one of Lumba’s sisters attended the court session as Serwaa’s representative, underscoring the family’s commitment to her.
“I have the sister of Lumba here and she represented Akosua Serwaa in court today and this demonstrates the kind of love the family has for Akosua Serwaa,” he stated. “So those out there who are making noise and making statement, they need to understand how all these things played out. And they should know that Akosua Serwaa is the victim not Odo Broni.”
Lawyer Kusi attributed the ongoing rift to the actions of Family Head Kofi Owusu Fosu, whom he accused of deepening the conflict. “Unfortunately, you know the posture of the Head of Family from the beginning, that is the cause of the problem. If letters are written to you, denying you of your rights as a wife, I am sure that you cannot just sleep and let it pass by so that is the originating issue,” he explained.
He reaffirmed that Akosua Serwaa and her children are determined to protect Daddy Lumba’s legacy by ensuring a respectful and timely burial. “We are committed to protecting the integrity of Lumba and we are ready to work within time to ensure that on the date that has been set, the funeral will come on and that is our project and what we are going to do,” he said.
Earlier that day, a Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Dorinda Smith Arthur, adjourned the case to October 28, 2025. The case, filed by Akosua Serwaa, seeks legal confirmation that she is the musician’s only lawful wife and therefore entitled to perform all widowhood rites.
Although the family has scheduled December 6, 2025, for the final funeral rites, the court case threatens to derail the preparations. During the proceedings, lawyers for the family head and Odo Broni challenged Serwaa’s right to bring the case before the court. Her counsel countered that the court must first address the injunction application before any other argument is entertained.
Justice Smith Arthur encouraged both parties to consider an amicable settlement, but assured that the case would receive priority if they decided to continue litigation.
In her statement of claim, Akosua Serwaa maintains that her marriage to Daddy Lumba was legally binding at the time of his death and is asking the court to restrain Odo Broni from presenting herself publicly as the musician’s widow.
