Abu Trica Extradition Ruling Scheduled for March 25 in Gbese District Court

The Gbese District Court is set to hand down a crucial ruling on March 25 in the extradition case involving Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica. The decision will determine whether the process initiated by U.S. authorities can move forward.

At the heart of the case is a preliminary objection from Kumi’s lawyers, who are challenging the legal grounds of the extradition request. The United States is seeking his transfer to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Oliver Barker Vormawor, leading Abu Trica’s defence team, argued that the extradition bid rests on shaky legal footing. According to the lawyers, the 1931 treaty between Ghana and the United States does not list the alleged offences as extraditable.

The defence further noted that the treaty’s provisions on conspiracy are narrowly tailored and do not encompass the charges Kumi faces. They stressed that Ghana cannot rely on later domestic laws to expand the treaty’s scope. “Any extradition must strictly adhere to the agreement as it was first signed,” the legal team insisted.

Outside the courtroom, the case has drawn public attention. Youth reportedly from Swedru gathered near the court, calling for Abu Trica’s release and highlighting the tension surrounding the proceedings.
