Dr Likee Recalls Being Told He Was “Mad” After Switching to Comedy Skits

Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, popularly known in entertainment circles as Dr Likee, has recounted how an unexpected career journey and early public doubt shaped his rise into one of Ghana’s most recognisable comedy personalities.

In an interview on 3Music TV, the Kumawood star reflected on his early acting days, explaining that his breakthrough was far from immediate. He said filmmakers repeatedly limited him to either gangster characters or minor supporting parts, leaving him with little room to showcase a wider range.

“I was always given roles as a gangster or a side role. I was always looking for a chance to get a bigger role. But the directors were always giving me such roles, and I couldn’t say no because it was very difficult to appear on screen in those days. So any role I was given, I took and I played it well,” he said.

His transition into comedy did not begin until the COVID-19 era, when he started producing skits online. Around the same period, he had also cut off his trademark dreadlocks and adopted a low-cut hairstyle, signalling a noticeable shift in his public image.

The change, however, was not immediately embraced by those around him. He revealed that his new direction sparked worry within his community, with rumours quickly spreading.

“When I started making skits, some people told my family I had finally gone mad,” he recalled.

Over time, his comedic content began gaining momentum on digital platforms, gradually changing how audiences perceived him and cementing his new identity.

Reflecting on the journey, he credited timing and faith for his transformation, saying the shift felt destined.

“There’s time for everything. Switching from playing gangster roles to comedy roles happened at the right time. In God’s time, he would make things work,” he said.
