Joe Mettle Clarifies AI Use in Music Production, Dismisses Spiritual Concerns

Joe Mettle

Gospel singer Joe Mettle has dismissed growing criticism about the role of artificial intelligence in gospel music production, arguing that technology does not weaken the spiritual essence of worship.

The award-winning artiste says he personally uses AI tools only at the final stage of his music process, strictly for polishing and refining already completed work.

He made the comments at the press launch of this year’s Praise Reloaded, themed The Rivers, where he addressed concerns from some industry colleagues who believe AI conflicts with spirituality in gospel music.

“But that is not the case. I use AI to polish and upgrade my songs, but only after I am done with the writing and production process. It helps shape the final sound and enhances what has already been spiritually and creatively put together.”

He stressed that AI does not replace human input in any part of his creative process.

“In this situation, AI is not creating the words or doing everything; you are still in charge. It only refines what you have put together. And I don’t think it is ungodly or unspiritual to do that,” he stated.

Mettle, popularly known for the hit song Kadosh, said the debate around technology in gospel ministry reflects changing times and urged artistes to be more open-minded.

“Times are changing, and as gospel artistes, we must be open enough to use the tools available to us rather than see them as ungodly. What is important is to guide its usage and not depend solely on it.

“We are still the ones writing, composing, and receiving inspiration. AI only helps us refine what we have already done. It is not taking away the Spirit in the music,” he added.

Over the years, Joe Mettle has built a strong catalogue that includes songs such as My Everything, Onwanwani, Mehia Wo Yesu, Bo Noo Ni, and Yesu Mo. He also made history in 2017 as the first gospel artiste to win Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.

That landmark achievement significantly elevated his career, expanding his international reach and cementing his place as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel voices, alongside multiple Gospel Artiste of the Year wins.

His annual Praise Reloaded concert has also grown into a major fixture on Ghana’s gospel calendar, attracting thousands of worshippers and reinforcing his influence in contemporary gospel worship.

This year’s edition will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, June 28. It marks the 14th edition of the event, which he describes as another opportunity for a deep spiritual encounter.

The 2025 TGMA Best Gospel Artiste is expected to lead the night alongside acts such as Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Bethel Revival, Eugene Zuta, with more guest artistes to be announced.
