The Accra High Court has granted bail to New Patriotic Party Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, after he was initially remanded in custody over charges of false publication.
Abronye reportedly returned to court on an application for bail pending trial, filed by his legal team and argued by former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah under the leadership of former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
“We move in terms of the motion paper and pray that the applicant be granted bail pending trial,” counsel for the applicant submitted.
Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, who represented the prosecution, informed the court that the Republic had no objection to the request for bail.
Following submissions from both sides, the court admitted Abronye to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.
The court also imposed additional conditions, directing the NPP communicator to report to the Police CID every two weeks, surrender all travel documents, and seek permission from the Registrar before travelling outside the jurisdiction.
The earlier decision to remand Abronye generated backlash from sections of the NPP as well as some legal analysts, who questioned the basis of the ruling and described it as a violation of his constitutional rights.
Explaining the remand order, however, the presiding judge said the court had acted out of concern that the accused could potentially commit another offence if granted immediate bail.
