Portia Asare recalls actress rejecting to act with her over English fluency

Portia Asare

Ghanaian actress Portia Asare has opened up about one of the most painful experiences in her acting career.

In an Instagram video, she recalled how an actress, primarily known for English-language movies, once told a producer she couldn’t act alongside a “local girl” like her.

According to Portia, the comment stemmed from claims that she lacked fluency in English, reinforcing the unfair stereotype that Kumawood actors are illiterate or inferior.

What hurt her even more was learning that this actress hadn’t even attended Senior High School or university.

Portia Asare also reflected on her humble upbringing, sharing memories of working on the farm with her family and eating meals together on leaves.

She further revealed that she is a mother of two—a 16-year-old boy and a younger daughter. She became a mother shortly after completing SHS but continued her education.

Encouraging parents to prioritize their children’s well-being, she urged them not to rely solely on government support.
