Ghana Free Zones CEO Apologises to Apostle Nyamekye After Public Backlash

Dr Mary Awusi

Dr Mary Awusi has moved to defuse tensions after her earlier remarks about illegal mining drew criticism, offering an apology to Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye of the Church of Pentecost.

The Ghana Free Zones Authority boss came under scrutiny following a pointed reaction she gave during a radio appearance, which quickly stirred debate. Speaking on Accra FM on Friday, April 24, she conceded that parts of her response may not have landed well with sections of the public.

She used the opportunity to underline her regard for Apostle Nyamekye, pointing to the discipline and spiritual commitment required to lead the Church of Pentecost. In her view, his position alone reflects a life of service and warrants respect.

Dr Awusi maintained that her comments were made in reaction to the church leader’s stance on galamsey and were not meant to cause offence.

“Maybe in the process of also expressing my opinion… if I said something that isn’t nice, I apologise,” she said, explaining that her earlier remarks were shaped by how she understood his position on the issue.

The disagreement traces back to statements made by Apostle Nyamekye at the Church’s 48th General Conference, where he raised concerns about the damage caused by illegal mining, citing both environmental consequences and its disruption to religious practices such as water baptism.
