Ghanaian socialite and musician Showboy has weighed in on the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025, widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ bill, offering a controversial take on its possible implications beyond Ghana’s borders.
In a post on X, he argued that the legislation could unintentionally open a pathway for some Ghanaians abroad to strengthen asylum claims in the United States.
He suggested that individuals could point to the law as evidence of possible persecution if they were required to return to Ghana.
“The anti-gay bill they passed will help a lot of Ghanaians in immigration detention centres in America seek asylum and file for CAT (Convention Against Torture) protection.
“For example, you can easily tell the judge that you are gay in Ghana and that you could be arrested if you return home, and then seek asylum. The bill has both positive and negative effects. It will benefit some Ghanaians living abroad,” he said.
The anti-LGBTQ bill was passed by Parliament for a second time on May 29, 2026.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had previously indicated in 2024 that he would withhold assent pending the outcome of a Supreme Court case involving the legislation.
That stance followed the bill’s initial passage by Parliament on February 28, 2024, during the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, although it was never signed into law before that parliamentary session ended.
The updated version has now been reintroduced and approved by Parliament once again. It maintains provisions that criminalise certain LGBTQ-related activities, while introducing revisions that carve out exemptions for specific individuals and institutions.
Under the amended framework, lawyers offering legal advice or representation to persons identified as LGBTQ will not face sanctions.
It also shields journalists and media organisations reporting on LGBTQ issues or covering related topics within their professional responsibilities.
