Enough is Enough Demo: No shooting at EC’s Kumasi office – Police clarify
The police have clarified that no shooting incident occurred at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission (EC), and no demonstrator was injured by police during Tuesday’s protest. The protest was organized to call on the EC to permit an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections.
However, the police stated that some demonstrators who violated the agreed arrangements by attempting to force their way into the EC office compound were restrained.
“We urge the media to exercise caution in their reportage,” the police said in a press statement.
The protests, which called for a forensic audit of the voters’ register, took place across the country. Some reports from Kumasi suggested a clash between the police and protesters, with allegations of gunshots being fired.
In response, the police issued a statement denying that any protesters were injured during the nationwide demonstrations led by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The statement addressed claims that the protests had turned violent in Kumasi following an altercation between the police and protesters at the EC’s regional office, with some reports mentioning the sound of gunfire.
On Tuesday, supporters of the opposition party took to the streets to pressure the EC into allowing an independent audit of the voters’ register as the nation prepares for the December 7 general elections.
The demonstration, held nationwide, was titled “Enough is Enough.”
The Ghana Police Service reiterated that individuals who disregarded the agreed arrangements and attempted to breach the EC office compound in Kumasi were “restrained.” The police once again urged media outlets to report on the protests with care.
