Sister Derby shares how job struggles in the UK led her to return to Ghana after earning her master’s degree
Ghanaian singer Sister Derby has opened up about why she returned to Ghana after earning her master’s degree in the United Kingdom.
In a recent interview on 3Music TV, the Uncle Obama singer spoke about her difficulties securing a job in the UK. Despite applying to numerous positions, she received no offers.
“I applied for so many jobs, but I couldn’t get one,” she said. “I spoke to one of my professors, and she explained that due to the recession in the UK, citizens were being prioritized for employment over other nationalities.”
Derby attended multiple interviews at prominent publishing companies and registered with various job agencies, but still received no callbacks.
Eventually, a Nigerian acquaintance helped her secure a sales job at a large pharmacy. However, feeling that the role was below her qualifications, she decided to leave.
After that, she made the choice to relocate to Ghana. “When I decided to return to Ghana and look for a job here, I happened to be on the last Ghana Airways flight, I think around January 2010,” Sister Derby recalled.
