No Escape for Agradaa: Court Allows Empress Gifty’s Defamation Suit to Proceed as She’s Fined GH¢6,000 for Time Wasting
Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Agradaa, has encountered a major courtroom setback after the Tema High Court rejected her motion to dismiss a GH¢20 million defamation lawsuit brought against her by gospel singer Empress Gifty.
In a ruling that underscored the court’s frustration with procedural delays, Agradaa was fined GH¢6,000 for wasting judicial time, a penalty tied to the unexplained absence of her legal team during an earlier hearing.
Confirming the court’s ruling, Empress Gifty’s husband, Hopeson Adorye, addressed jubilant supporters gathered at the court premises.
“The court ordered her to pay GH¢6,000 to Empress,” he revealed.
In addition to dismissing the application, the court granted an interim injunction restricting Agradaa from mentioning Empress Gifty’s name or issuing defamatory statements about her on any social media platform.
The suit originates from a controversial live broadcast aired on May 13, 2025, during which Agradaa allegedly accused Empress Gifty of immoral conduct involving pastors, alongside other derogatory claims.
The defamation claim, officially filed on May 20, seeks GH¢20 million in damages as well as a permanent ban on further defamatory remarks. Empress Gifty has also requested the removal of all offending content from digital platforms.
At the initial court sitting on June 11, proceedings were stalled due to the absence of Agradaa’s lawyers, who argued that the court documents had not been properly served. Their failure to appear triggered a delay and ultimately led to the GH¢6,000 fine.
In a separate development, Agradaa reportedly directed verbal abuse at a legal practitioner involved in the case. A formal letter demanding an apology and retraction has already been issued.
With the preliminary objections now resolved, the defamation case is set to continue. The next hearing has been scheduled for July 16, 2025.
