Famous Ghanaian artiste, Stonebwoy, has expressed profound grief over the August 6, 2025, helicopter disaster in the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of eight people, among them Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH went down with no survivors, triggering a wave of shock and condolences across the country and beyond.
Speaking to TV3 on August 7, a visibly shaken Stonebwoy described the tragedy as a personal and national blow, revealing that both ministers held a special place in his heart.
“Honourable Murtala Mohammed was a big supporter of BHIM Nation, a father figure. The former Ashanti Regional Minister was also like family to me. It’s difficult to comprehend; waking up to the news was crazy,” he said.
The grief was intensified by the timing, he added, as the month of August marks a decade since his mother’s passing.
“This is the tenth year of the month my mother passed away, so I was already in a certain mood. And then all these were added on. It’s not easy,” he disclosed.
Stonebwoy fondly recalled his bond with Dr Murtala Mohammed, highlighting a moment of public support that left a lasting mark on him.
“My relationship with Alhaji Dr Murtala was like that of a father and son. We spoke on the phone many times. What actually heightened it was when he was in an interview and expressed his love and support for my brand.
“He showed that from his level as a politician, he could still appreciate reggae and dancehall while serving the nation,” he noted.
Calling the loss not just personal but a blow to the entire country, the Burniton Music boss urged the state to take stronger measures to prevent future aviation disasters.
“This isn’t just a family loss; Ghana has been hit. The state must employ measures to avoid such disasters,” Stonebwoy stated.
