Ghanaian gospel singer Brother Sammy has stated that strict dress codes in church keep people away from God rather than bringing them closer.
During an interview on Hitz FM, Sammy questioned why some churches expect Christians to dress in overly modest or plain attire to prove their faith. He believes that looking good and dressing fashionably can actually help draw others to the faith.
“Just because you are a Christian doesn’t mean you should dress like a pauper. Dress fashionably. Christians are supposed to look fashionable to attract ‘worldly’ people to God. So when they see you dressing good, they will be like, ‘I can also dress like that and come to church,’” he stated.
The singer shared a story to back his point, revealing that he once invited a woman to church who refused because she felt she didn’t have the right clothes. For him, that moment reflected how rigid attitudes toward appearance can discourage people from seeking spiritual growth.
Brother Sammy expressed concern that many individuals have drifted away from church because of judgment over their looks, including hairstyles, tattoos, or their fashion choices.
“Many people have left the church because they were discriminated against for their dressing, or because they had dreadlocks or because they had tattoos. But those are rather the people that should be in church,” he said.
Explaining his personal style, the controversial gospel singer said his love for fashion is intentional; it’s part of his message about what modern Christianity should represent.
“That is why I have changed my life. No one in Ghana wears better suits than me. I dress this way to prove that Christianity can look good. It is to show that no matter how you look, Christ still loves you, so come to him,” Brother Sammy posited.
