Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has commended goalkeeper Benjamin Asare for his remarkable rise to prominence, describing him as one of the team’s most reliable performers.
Since making his debut in March 2025 against Chad during the World Cup qualifiers, Asare has firmly established himself as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, surpassing several seasoned names in the process.
The Hearts of Oak captain has impressed with his consistency and leadership, earning widespread praise from fans and coaches alike. His record speaks volumes, five clean sheets in six international appearances and just one goal conceded in Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign. In the domestic league, he remains unbeaten, yet to concede a single goal this season.
Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Addo expressed his admiration for Asare’s skills and mentality.
“He’s really good. I think his strength is definitely on the line. Short blocking and on the line. There’s still room to improve, but I think he’s growing from game to game,” Otto Addo said.
Asare’s emergence comes at a crucial time for Ghana, following years of uncertainty in the goalkeeping department. His success has challenged the long-held notion that only Europe-based players can excel internationally, proving that local talent can perform at the highest level.
Addo revealed that Asare’s defining moment came during a decisive training session.
“It was a close decision. The turning point was the last training when we invited him. He really trained well. He had this self-consciousness. He was pushing the players, organizing, doing everything he could to win this training match. This really convinced us,” he recalled.
