Court Reportedly Gives Maternal Family Deadline and GH₵2m Demand in New Twist to Daddy Lumba Funeral Dispute

A fresh directive from the Accra High Court has placed a significant financial condition on the ongoing family battle over Daddy Lumba’s final rites, requiring the applicants to deposit GH₵2 million by 2:00 pm today. Without that payment, the musician’s funeral will move forward tomorrow as planned.

During proceedings, the court summoned counsel for both sides to clarify the purpose of the order. It stated that the funds would serve as compensation for any expenses already incurred in preparing for the funeral should the burial be halted later, Myjoyonline reported.

This development builds on the earlier injunction that stopped family head Kofi Owusu from taking charge of the burial and prevented Transitions Funeral Home from handing over the late artist’s body. That initial order stemmed from disagreements between the maternal family and the Abusuapanyin over who should lead the funeral arrangements and how funds should be managed.

The court had also highlighted the importance of respecting Akan customs, instructing the first respondent to consult with the immediate family and convene a stakeholder engagement within three weeks to settle on an acceptable burial date.

By tying the continuation of the injunction to a GH₵2 million payment, the High Court is attempting to keep the legal process intact while avoiding unnecessary disruption to the scheduled rites. The condition ensures that if plans change again, associated costs will not go to waste.

Daddy Lumba, who died on 26 July 2025 at 60, remains one of Ghana’s most influential musical figures. As preparations for his burial unfold, attention remains fixed not only on his legacy but also on the unresolved tensions surrounding his final journey.
