Benjamin Asare’s growing influence in Ghana’s World Cup campaign has earned the admiration of Black Stars legend Asamoah Gyan, who believes the goalkeeper’s consistency has played a major role in the team’s impressive run.
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper was among Ghana’s top performers as the Black Stars battled England to a 0-0 draw in their second Group L fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
With England pushing for a breakthrough, Asare repeatedly came to Ghana’s rescue. His most memorable moment arrived late in the game when he produced a superb save to deny England skipper Harry Kane and preserve the deadlock.
Ghana survived another scare shortly afterward when Nico O’Reilly’s header crashed against the crossbar, allowing the Black Stars to escape without conceding.
Reflecting on the goalkeeper’s display, Gyan praised Asare’s composure and ability to position himself effectively during matches, qualities he believes have made him a dependable presence between the posts.
“Benjamin Asare is very composed. Wherever he is, you can see the ball comes there,” Gyan said.
The former Black Stars captain also recalled the goalkeeper’s importance during Ghana’s journey to the World Cup, insisting his contributions have often proved decisive.
“He kept Ghana alive so many times in the qualifiers,” Asamoah Gyan further stated.
Asare’s rise on the global stage has continued since stepping in for the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi during Ghana’s opening match against Panama. Since then, he has taken full advantage of the opportunity, delivering assured performances whenever called upon.
His reliability at the back has helped Ghana remain one of the few nations yet to concede a goal at the tournament.
Having followed their 1-0 victory over Panama with a clean sheet against England, the Black Stars head into their final group game in a strong position, with qualification hopes firmly in their own hands.
