A fresh legal battle has emerged in the case involving Frederick Kumi, well known as Abu Trica, after his lawyer asked the High Court in Accra to compel the Attorney-General to allow him access to his client following an extradition ruling.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who represents Abu Trica, reportedly made the oral application after raising concerns that neither he nor his legal team knew where his client had been taken after the court ordered his extradition to the United States over an alleged $8 million romance scam.
When proceedings resumed on July 6, Barker-Vormawor told the court that Abu Trica’s location remained unknown since the extradition order was granted.
“We still don’t know where our client is being held,” he said.
The lawyer also disclosed that he had formally written to the Attorney-General requesting permission to meet with his client, but said the request had gone unanswered.
Following the application, the court temporarily stood the matter down to allow the Attorney-General to respond before deciding whether to grant the order for access.
Separately, the court adjourned an application seeking to suspend the execution of the extradition order until July 9, 2026.
Abu Trica was taken back into custody shortly after the High Court rejected his attempt to block his extradition. Security officers rearrested him immediately after the ruling to begin the extradition process. His legal team has since indicated that it will challenge the High Court’s decision before the Supreme Court.
