“I Had No Idea” – Stonebwoy Opens Up on Shock BET Nomination

Stonebwoy

Stonebwoy has opened up about the unexpected moment he learned of his BET Awards nomination, revealing it caught him completely off guard.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, the Ghanaian artiste said there was no prior indication he was even in contention. At the time, he was outside Ghana working on a project when the news reached him.

He explained that while on a music video shoot in Nigeria, an email suddenly came through announcing his nomination, a development he had not anticipated in any way.

“…I remember I was in Nigeria shooting a music video, and when the nominations came out, my name was there. For those who don’t know, I had no idea how I even ended up at the BETs.
“If anyone thinks we were aware or that we submitted our music here and there… I don’t know. And it’s not anything within management, to be very honest,” he said.

Reflecting on the aftermath, Stonebwoy acknowledged that the win elevated his profile, but believes the full potential of that milestone was never realised.

“I think my life would have been better anyway because winning a BET at that time, as a reggae dancehall or afrodancehall artiste, is what Burna Boy represents today.

“…I remember vividly that it became a situation where there was a certain media attack, and that also took away a lot of the prominence we could have gained from it,” he added.

Stonebwoy eventually clinched the 2015 Best International Act: Africa prize, finishing ahead of a strong field that included Sarkodie, AKA, Fally Ipupa, Sauti Sol, The Soil, Wizkid, and Yemi Alade.
