Sista Afia has asked fellow musicians to pay closer attention to an often-overlooked part of live performances: the hygiene of the microphone they put to their mouths.
The Ghanaian singer raised the issue on social media on Friday, August 28, 2026, urging artists to make microphone disinfection part of their routine before stepping on stage.
Her concern stems from the reality of live entertainment, where the same microphone can be handled and used by several performers during a single event.
“I’m going to say something controversial, but my fellow artists need to hear this,” she began before making her central appeal: “PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT!”
Sista Afia pointed out that musicians regularly move from one show to another, often relying on microphones supplied by event organisers, sound engineers or venues.
She noted that the equipment may have already been used by several people who sing, speak or breathe directly into it.
“We go from show to show sharing microphones with God knows how many people. Everyone is singing, talking, breathing and sometimes literally putting their mouths on the mic!” she wrote.
The singer linked the concern to a familiar experience among performers who sometimes return home from shows feeling unwell.
However, she was careful not to claim that shared microphones are responsible for illnesses among artists.
“I’m not saying every sickness after a show comes from a microphone,” she clarified, adding that the number of people who use the same equipment makes it reasonable to take additional precautions.
Her recommendation is for artists to keep microphone-safe disinfectant sprays or sanitising wipes in their bags and clean the equipment before performing.
She also suggested that musicians who can afford it should consider taking their own microphones to shows.
The advice may sound simple, but Sista Afia believes it is worth adopting, particularly for performers whose work involves frequent concerts, parties, festivals and other public events.
Her message also touches on a broader issue within live entertainment: performers often have little control over equipment that passes through the hands of numerous people during a busy event.
For artists, therefore, carrying a few sanitising wipes could become as practical as keeping other performance essentials in their bags.
Sista Afia ended her appeal by reminding her colleagues that the precaution is ultimately about protecting themselves.
“My fellow colleagues, please let’s start taking this seriously. Your health first. Disinfect your mic before you perform,” she said.
Whether her suggestion becomes a standard practice among performers remains to be seen, but her post has put an unusual aspect of stage preparation firmly in the spotlight.
