The Techiman Municipal Girl Child Coordinator of the Ghana Education Service, Madam Ellen White has expressed  worry about the increasing number of child marriages in the Municipality and is calling for an end to the practice.

Child marriage remains a challenge in Ghana. Over the years, government and development partners have made various commitments and efforts to curb the phenomenon of child marriage but it is still ongoing.

In Ghana more than one in every five girls according to statistics marries before the age of 18  and 5% also marry before their 15th birthday.

Madam Ellen White, the Techiman Municipal Girl Child Coordinator in an interview with First News indicated that child marriage is on the increase in the Municipality.

“There is one girl who is 16 years and she been given out for marriage. She was due to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year but because of this, she cannot write her exams, this is disturbing,” She disclosed.

The Coordinator noted that fighting the menace is becoming difficult because of lack of cooperation from both parents and the victims.

“It is a very serious issue I encountered one just one last week a lady which is just 16 years who has been forced into marriage in the Municipality and because of the previous instances we are not able to get to the root of it. You go to the parents they tell you is a tradition they are happy with and the girl in question is also happy with it so it becomes a problem. We are pleading with to parents and leaders to help fight the menace.”
