I Wanted To Prove People Wrong-Doreen Awuah
Ace-Ghanaian female soccer star, Doreen Awuah, has revealed that her determination not to fall where others have fallen, has been her life-long guiding principle to transform her life.
“Coming from a relatively poor home, I resolved to prove a point to society that no one is destined to live and die poor. Life is all about you – whether you fail or succeed depends on your own self”.
These were some of the philosophical statements Doreen made in a live interview with Kofi Asomah Regan of Suncity Sports fame when he led a panel discussion on, “Life After Football.”
The General Captain for Techiman-based Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC, who also played for GHATEL Ladies, Prisons Ladies, and the Senior National women’s Team, the Black Queens, said she determined within herself to profit greatly from her football career, no matter how others had faired.
This informed her resolve to take her football career seriously and build houses for herself and her parents. “Therefore, I carried my building plans with me whenever and wherever duty calls (Training, Camping, and Tournaments) to continually remind me of my resolution. Thank God, I have been able to achieve this desire”, the cute soccer gem told the panel with confidence.
Doreen used the opportunity to urge her colleague footballers to shun worldly pleasures like expensive dresses, drinking and partying, and with self-discipline, save enough for their future well-being. “Life is all about you – if you fail to tune up your mind, people will push you over and later, make you a wanderer,” she advised.
She was grateful all who helped her get to the top of her career especially, Mr. Ransford Antwi, CEO of Suncity Radio) and also urged her colleagues to show appreciation to all those who helped them in their career, for this is more blessing.
She said it was in this vein that she initiated the “Tene Wonsa” Project aimed at supporting talented young girls and giving back to society.
The General Captain thanked the government, Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and the sports ministry for disbursing the Covid19 stimulus package to footballers, describing it as a worthy intervention in times like these.
She, therefore, urged her colleagues to use the monies judiciously to safeguard their present and future working situations by saving and investing part of the monies they receive.
