Ghanaian Artist Uses Pyrography To Address Societal Challenges

Pyrography, the artistic practice of embellishing wood or other materials with controlled burn marks using heated tools.

Ghanaian artist Isaac Djan has adopted pyrography to tackle pressing social issues. In his unique approach, he employs this method to vividly portray scenes of ecological significance, intending to foster awareness about conservation and advocate for sustainable practices.

Time Management

Through his works, he aims to draw attention to the consequences of such actions and encourage a collective responsibility towards environmental preservation. His works serves as a educational materials in addressing various issues.

Beyond environmental concerns, Isaac Djan extends his artistic vision to address broader societal issues, including but not limited to poor parenting, inefficient time management, and the complexities of tribal politics.

Parenting

Isaac in an interview with FirstNewsRoom discloses why he opted for Pyrography, “My primary motivation for engaging in Pyrography lies in the distinctive nature of the technique, characterized by a gold-like appearance. This aesthetic quality holds particular significance for me, as my homeland, Ghana, has a historical association with gold that spans ages. Over the past seven years, I have dedicated myself extensively to the art of Pyrography.”

The Battle for Supremacy

Isaac who holds Master of Philosophy in Art Education from the University of Education, Winneba in Ghana disclosed that, “Through my works, I have explored themes related to parenting, sustainable environmental practices, stress management, time management in Ghana, and ethical considerations in Ghanaian politics.”

Beyond his social concerns, his focus on portraiture has allowed him to highlight and celebrate the positive contributions of individuals dedicated to improving Ghana and the global community.

“I must acknowledge that a significant challenge in my artistic journey is the exposure to smoke resulting from the wood-burning process. Despite the difficulty of avoiding, it during continuous and extensive practice, my passion for Pyrography persists,” he discloses.

Prince Owusu Acheampong, the teacher who introduced Isaac to Pyrography at the Senior High School level has this to say on the progress he has made.,

“I feel proud for been part of his career and life. Isaac was an outstanding student, most people; teachers, family and friends wanted him to offer other programs rather than Visual Art, that was when I came in to encourage him to offer Visual Art.”
