Nkroful Chiefs Forgive NAPO for Comments About Nkrumah

The Chiefs and people of Nkroful have forgiven Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his remarks about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, stated that President Akufo-Addo had outperformed Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which led to widespread criticism. While some entirely disagreed with the comparison, others took issue with the way it was presented.

Following the backlash, NAPO issued an apology for his comments. However, the chiefs of Nkroful, Dr. Nkrumah’s hometown, insisted that the NPP running mate apologize in person before they would accept it.

During a tour of the Nzemaland, NAPO visited Nkroful to express his remorse directly. He stated, “I grew up among Nzema people; we are one and the same. I would never intend to disrespect Nkrumah in any way. Anyone who attempts to do so must face the consequences of their actions. Nkrumah has done so much for this country.

My comments were misconstrued, but I apologize again here, in front of you. Please forgive me, we are all one people.”

In response, the chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua, accepted the apology. “NAPO’s comments were widely condemned by Ghanaians, and rightly so. We appreciate the response of the people.

Nkrumah’s contributions to this nation are undeniable. We are a peaceful people who do not want chaos in Ghana, especially not because of the Nzema people. While we acknowledged NAPO’s earlier apology to Ghanaians, it was necessary for him to come here and personally apologize to our traditional leaders and reaffirm his regret. Today, he has done just that, and we accept his apology.”
