President Akufo-Addo dismisses Director General of National Sports Authority after CAF stadium ban

Dodzie Numekevor

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has dismissed the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dodzie Numekevor.

The announcement came via a letter from the Office of the President on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

Numekevor has been instructed to hand over his duties to the Chairman of the NSA Governing Board.

His dismissal is widely speculated to be in response to public outcry over the poor condition of several stadiums across Ghana, which has generated significant controversy.

Recently, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew approval for the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi due to its poor pitch and other deficiencies, sparking widespread disappointment among Ghanaians.

Former Ghanaian footballer Stephen Appiah even called the situation a national embarrassment, as Ghana may be forced to play matches outside the country.

Numekevor was appointed interim Director General of the NSA on February 26, 2024, after the dismissal of Prof. Peter Twumasi, who had served in the role for six years and was removed due to similar concerns over stadium maintenance.
