Ghanaian artiste and media personality Blakk Rasta has criticized the branding efforts of artistes in the country, stating that they fall short of international standards.
He urged artistes to elevate their craft if they seek global recognition, emphasizing that branding goes beyond luxury purchases like Rolls-Royces and houses.
“Ghanaian acts must raise the bar. We need to brand ourselves to a level where we are considered international artistes. Our artistes are afraid to invest in their craft. You buy a Rolls-Royce and expect people to show up for your concerts—no. Branding isn’t just about owning luxury cars and houses; it’s about investing in your career. It’s not mandatory to buy a Rolls-Royce,” he said on UTV’s United Showbiz program.
However, Blakk Rasta praised gospel artiste Sonnie Badu for his strategic investments in his brand and career.
“Look at Sonnie Badu’s recent concert—did you see the number of people he had on stage? When he performs in the UK, look at the caliber of people he parades on stage. Do you think he makes a profit from every show? He loses money on many of them, but his brand remains strong. Meanwhile, we’re here buying Rolls-Royces,” he remarked.
Blakk Rasta encouraged Ghanaian artistes to take inspiration from Sonnie Badu’s approach and prioritize long-term brand development over fleeting displays of wealth.
