Ghana Black Stars: Otto Addo names 23-man squad for Unity Cup 2025 in London
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has finalized a 23-man squad for the upcoming Unity Cup 2025 in London, spotlighting a blend of homegrown prospects, returning stars, and exciting young talents from across Europe.
Four locally-based players have earned their spots in the team: Benjamin Asare (Hearts of Oak), Razak Simpson (Nations FC), Kamaradini Mamudu (Medeama SC), and Kwame Opoku (Asante Kotoko). Their inclusion underscores Addo’s commitment to integrating domestic talent on the international stage.
Joining them is former West Ham United goalkeeper Joseph Tetteh Anang, who currently plies his trade with St. Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland. Anang receives his maiden call-up to the national team, adding fresh depth to Ghana’s goalkeeping ranks.
Youthful energy also features prominently in the squad, with U-20 Africa Cup of Nations standouts Abdul Aziz Issah and Aaron Essel getting the nod following their impressive performances for the Black Satellites in Egypt.
In-form defender Caleb Yirenkyi of FC Nordsjaelland and Union Saint-Gilloise’s Mohammed Gadafi Fuseini bolster Ghana’s European contingent. Their strong club performances have not gone unnoticed.
Meanwhile, familiar faces return to the Black Stars fold. Sunderland midfielder Abdul Samed Salis rejoins the squad after recovering from a lengthy injury layoff, while Anderlecht’s Majeed Ashimeru is also back in contention. Notably, forward Felix Afena Gyan makes his long-awaited return after nearly two years away from international duty.
The selected players are expected to assemble in London this week to begin preparations for the tournament, which will feature Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica, according a report.
Ghana’s first test will be a high-stakes encounter against Nigeria at the GTech Community Stadium in West London on Wednesday, May 28. A win would secure them a place in the Unity Cup final set for Saturday, May 31, 2025.
