Mavis Hawa Koomson, former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, is voicing strong dissatisfaction over what she calls silence and indifference from President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang after she was physically assaulted during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 11, 2025.
In a July 16 interview with Asempa FM, Koomson expressed particular disappointment in Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, pointing to the lack of solidarity from one woman to another in the aftermath of the violent incident.
“As we speak, not even one of them has called me (President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang). I am very surprised that Vice President Naana Jane, as a woman… today, we say we have a sitting female Vice President, she has not even called to check on me. I expected better,” she said.
According to Koomson, not a single high-ranking government official, aside from members of her own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had reached out with concern or support following the attack.
Despite the silence from the top, she acknowledged receiving a personal call from Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, who assured her that authorities were taking the matter seriously and that investigations were underway.
“He called and told me that they are taking the matter seriously. He said he has instructed the regional police commander to investigate thoroughly and bring those behind the attack to book,” she revealed.
The assault occurred at the St Peter’s Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where attackers overwhelmed security personnel before physically targeting Koomson. The incident has since drawn widespread attention, raising fresh concerns about political violence and the response of state leadership.
