Ghana Mourns Daddy Lumba: One-Week Observation Draws Leaders, Stars, and Fans

Daddy Lumba

Ghanaians from all walks of life gathered at Black Star Square in Accra on Saturday, August 30, 2025, to mark the one-week observation of legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, better known as Daddy Lumba. The event turned into a massive show of respect, drawing statesmen, political leaders, celebrities, and fans united in grief.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh were among the most prominent figures in attendance. They were joined by New Patriotic Party flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, representatives of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, and members of the Minority Caucus of Parliament led by Afenyo-Markin. The creative arts industry was also heavily represented, with appearances from Amakye Dede, Sarkodie, Kojo Antwi, Diana Asamoah, Pat Thomas, Kofi Nti, Ras Levi, Kwabena Kwabena, Kay Blez, Oheneba Kissi, K. Owusu, and comic actor Salinko, among others.

Tributes were matched by generous support for the bereaved family. Nana Akufo-Addo donated GH₵100,000, reminding mourners of the campaign song Daddy Lumba once composed for him. Contributions also came from Kennedy Agyapong (GH₵10,000), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (GH₵50,000), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (GH₵5,000), Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (GH₵5,000), and the Ghana Police Service (GH₵30,000).

The occasion was not without music. Fellow greats, including Amakye Dede, performed in memory of the man who shaped Ghanaian highlife for decades.

Although the gathering was marked by solemnity and celebration of life, the family has yet to announce the date of the final funeral rites. Earlier statements, however, confirmed that the funeral will be held in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region.

Daddy Lumba, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most iconic musicians, died on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra. He was 60.
