DSTV Is a Luxury, Not a Necessity – Nana Romeo Slams Sam George, Urges Him to Focus on Bigger Issues

Nana Romeo and Sam George

Ghanaian media personality Nana Romeo has urged Communications and Digitalisation Minister Samuel Nartey George (Sam George) to drop his battle with DStv over subscription prices and turn his attention to issues he says matter more to Ghanaians.

Speaking on his Okay FM program, Romeo argued that DStv is far from a basic need and should not be treated as a pressing national concern.

“DSTV is not a necessity. It is a luxury good. Even when the NDC came to power. The president stopped the payment of DSTV in government offices. Multichoice never came to complain about it. They themselves know that DSTV is not needed by everyone; anyone who can afford it can buy it,” he said.

Romeo warned that shutting down DSTV services would end up punishing Ghanaians rather than the company, noting that Multichoice has long invested in the local entertainment industry and holds exclusive broadcasting rights to major sports competitions.

“Some movie producers have shared how Multichoice is even helping the movie industry by producing some movies and TV shows. Aside from that, those into sports can only watch through DSTV, even the World Cup qualifiers between Chad and Ghana; no Ghanaian TV station had the rights to it, only DSTV. So shutting it down will be a huge discredit to them,” he stressed.

He advised the minister to seek compromise with the service provider rather than resorting to threats.

On DSTV pricing, Romeo pointed out that differences in cost are common across many goods and services, suggesting a broader approach to consumer protection.

“Speaking of overpricing, a single product like a bottle of water can be sold at different prices at different places. We need a general pricing mechanism. These are the things to be fighting for. Not DSTV,” he remarked.

Romeo further reminded Sam George of his outspoken activism on LGBTQ+ matters before assuming office, contrasting that with his current focus.

“Before you came into power, you focused on the issue of LGBTQ. Ever since you came to office, you have been silent on it. These are things to be fighting for, not DSTV,” he added.
