Mark Okraku-Mantey is urging a new vision for the East Legon home of the late Highlife musician Daddy Lumba, proposing that the property evolve into a commercial and cultural space rather than remain a private residence. The former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts believes the house could become a profitable attraction that preserves the musician’s legacy while generating steady revenue for the family.
In a recent interview with Aluta FM, Okraku-Mantey argued that leaving the property solely for inheritance offers little long-term value. He suggested that the family develop the house into a museum, a conference venue and a small restaurant open to visitors.
He explained that such a transformation would give Ghanaians and tourists an opportunity to explore the story of Daddy Lumba’s life and career. “Daddy Lumba’s East Legon residence should be turned into a museum. The family could earn a lot of money, and it would be more useful than just living there to sleep and bath. His house could host a conference centre for meetings, and a small restaurant could be added where, for example, President Mahama could entertain visitors and have dinner,” he said.
Daddy Lumba died on July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital after a brief illness.
Plans for his final funeral rites have also shifted. The Manhyia Palace announced that the ceremony has been moved from December 6 to December 13, 2025. The change was reached after discussions at the Otumfuo Saamanhene Palace on November 10, where a new committee chaired by the Dadiesoabahene was tasked with managing the arrangements.
During that meeting, the musician’s sister, Ernestina Akosua Fosu, called for a postmortem, raising worries that her brother’s death may not have been straightforward.
Do you agree with Okraku-Mantey?
Watch his statement below.
“We can build a conference centre and a mini restaurant at Daddy Lumba’s house, where President Mahama could even host guests.”
