Celestine Donkor Reveals the Three Values That Keep Her Marriage and Ministry Strong

Celestine Donkor

Ghanaian gospel singer Celestine Donkor believes marriage is sustained by deliberate choices rather than chance. She says her union has endured because it is anchored on what she calls three firm pillars: “true love, true understanding, and true forgiveness,” principles she insists are essential for anyone balancing family life with a demanding spiritual calling.

In a one-on-one interview with Lekzy Decomic on Joy Prime’s prime time show, Celestine explained that these values are not optional ideals but daily practices that make marriage functional. According to her, commitment to those foundations matters more than perfection. “I believe you can marry any guy,” she said, provided those principles are consistently applied.

Her outlook, she noted, is shaped by her Christian faith, which teaches that love was never meant for flawless people. Drawing on that belief, she said, “What introduced love to us is Christ, and Christ loved us while we were still sinners. Love is supposed to be done to imperfect people, but we humans want to love perfect people, and that is the struggle.” For her, love remains “an antidote to imperfection.”

Celestine also highlighted the role her husband plays in her life and career. Serving as her manager, he has been instrumental in helping her juggle marriage, motherhood, and ministry. She described their partnership as fully integrated, rather than compartmentalised. “I have married my family and my ministry. Everything is married,” she said.

She further challenged the idea that family and ministry should be kept separate. In her view, such a division is unrealistic. “It’s really hard to separate family from ministry. I believe family is ministry, so my husband is in it, and so are my children. Everybody does their role appropriately,” she added.

Reflecting on her personal journey, the singer disclosed that music was never part of her original career plan. “The plan was to be a businesswoman or to study law, but I ended up doing music,” she revealed.

She also recounted a difficult moment in her marriage that tested her emotional strength and discipline. Amid a misunderstanding with her husband, she still had to minister before an audience. “I had to pull myself together and show up for ministration despite the circumstance,” she recalled, describing the level of self-control she believes is necessary to successfully manage both marriage and ministry.
