Abu Trica Granted GH₵30m Bail After Months in Custody Over U.S. Extradition Case

Frederick Kumi, otherwise known as Abu Trica, has secured temporary freedom after the High Court approved bail in his ongoing extradition case, a shift that follows months of failed attempts by his legal team.

The court reportedly set bail at GH₵30 million and required two justified sureties to back the conditions.

News of the ruling was shared on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, in a Facebook update confirming that his client had finally been granted bail after a prolonged stay in custody.

The decision marks a turning point in a case where earlier applications for bail had repeatedly been denied, even as the defence contested the legitimacy of the extradition process.

Abu Trica, described as a social media personality and businessman, was arrested on December 11, 2025, during a coordinated operation involving Ghanaian security agencies and authorities from the United States.

Prosecutors allege he was linked to an international cybercrime network accused of running romance scams targeting elderly victims in the US. Investigators say the group used fabricated identities to build online relationships and ultimately defrauded victims of more than $8 million.

Court documents from earlier proceedings indicate that he faces charges such as conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy, offences that could carry sentences of up to 20 years if proven in a US court.

Authorities further claim that members of the alleged syndicate relied on artificial intelligence tools to design convincing fake profiles and gain victims’ trust before requesting money under various pretences.

After his arrest, he was first taken before the Gbese District Court in Accra, where extradition proceedings began following a formal request from US officials seeking his transfer for trial.

The case initially included two other individuals, Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, but prosecutors later dropped charges against them, citing a lack of evidence.

Their removal became a key pillar of the defence’s argument, with lawyers insisting that the collapse of the alleged conspiracy weakened the case against Abu Trica.

Building on that position, his legal team pursued several applications, including judicial review and certiorari at the High Court, in a bid to overturn the District Court process and stop the extradition altogether.

Those efforts did not immediately yield results, and he remained in custody until the latest bail ruling.
